Abstract:
Our research question is on the relationship between salad ingredients and its price. Our hypothesis is that we are actually paying for the ingredient contained when we buy a salad. The more expensive the salad is, the more ingredients we are going to get, in addition we want to verify the identity of each ingredient and make sure that the salad is worth the price. To prove our hypothesis, we planned to collect five different kinds of salad from different convenience stores and an expensive salad served in restaurants. We collected specimens of ingredients in each salad. After that, we will use silica extraction method to extract DNA from plant specimens, and Chelex extraction method for animal specimens. After DNA sequencing, we will analyze ingredients in different salads and see whether they match with the ingredients information they provided and compare different salad with their prices to see if the result matches our hypothesis.
